Earlier this week, I got in touch with my doctor and we set a date for my surgery. Tomorrow I’m going in at five in the morning and getting my bunion corrected. The recovery will be three weeks at least, with some general healing after that. I’m not excited about being grounded, but I’d rather get it over with now.

Last weekend we made a short Mother’s Day trip to Margaritaville with my family. My mom, stepfather, brother, and niece all made the trip the year before, and we’d only heard good things about it in the year since. Last year, we felt pretty good about saying no. This year, something about spending hundreds of dollars to sit by the pool all day spoke to us.

That’s one thing I’ve really noticed as my wife and I grow older together. A vacation used to mean a city to us. It meant a hotel downtown, tickets to a game, and bar hopping for a weekend. We spent our honeymoon in San Francisco. Pregnant or not, though, our idea of a vacation seems to be changing. We’re talking about getting a hotel by the beach, something that’s never interested us before. We’re talking about sitting out in the sun, something that’s never interested my wife before. Slowing down was to be expected, but the water? That’s never been our thing.

But let me tell you, spending hundreds of dollars to sit by the pool all day? Well worth it.

My in-laws met us there for brunch on Sunday, and we figured this was the perfect opportunity to surprise them. The private sonographer we visited offers these build-a-bears that can house the baby’s heartbeat. Because my mother was with us, we let her choose which she wanted, and she chose a dragon of all things. My mother-in-law loves pandas, so we got her one of those. After the appointment, we bought a pack of plain white onesies, and my wife decorated it herself to say Grandma’s Little Princess. She also added dreams do come true because my mother-in-law had a dream about waving a pink butterfly net and that told her the baby was going to be a girl.

We figured, she’ll read and be surprised. Especially since my in-laws didn’t know we’d scheduled a week sixteen appointment.
